D'Arcy Garbutt Cup 2nd November 2013

On Saturday the 2nd of November Wakefield College weightlifting club hosted neighbours Featherstone Weightlifting club for the second edition of the club match. It is held in honour of two great lifters and people in the history of lifting, from internationally to the fact they were founding members at both clubs, these being Jack Garbutt and Les D'Arcy for whom the trophy is named after.

The format as before was all club members can take part with the best three performers from each club deciding the winner, using the traditional 2 kilo per kilo bodyweight scoring.

For Featherstone Mark Wager snatched what would have been a British snatch record of 125 kilo, (using straps as guesting) and lifted a solid 130 kilo jerk despite a wrist injury. Molly Jane Dyas, lifting as a run out for her successful visit to the school girls the following day, posted a solid 20 kilo snatch and 33 kilo clean and jerk, defiantly one for the future! Haydn Luke, one week back from holiday, lifted exceptionally well to post a 153 kilo total, as did Martyn Riley with the support of his son doing the magic trick of helping him finish second with a 150 kilo total in the individual competition. But the individual winner was Nick Hall who only 12 months ago was having surgery on his back that could have ended his lifting career. Today he posted a massive 190 kilo total at 50 years of age.

Mick Butterworth, lifting for Wakefield, posted a 140 kilo total and showed the former three time British champion is still an example to all lifters. Sam Sheen broke off from his university studios to support his club with a very solid 155 kilo total and his uncle Paul Sheen posted a 150 kilo total despite injury to support his club when needed. Thanks to Mark Helme and Alan Whitworth for officiating at the event and making sure the event was a success, maintaining the great bond forming between the local clubs.

Special mention to guest lifter Justine Davis Hirst who travelled from Bradford, lifted well and then donated an old lifting suit to young Molly to use, wishing her well, (proper class Justine!)

At the end when Mark handed me the cup and congratulated Featherstone, WEIGHTLIFTING WAS THE WINNER!
